# How to read a NYC certified business record — MBE, WBE, EBE, LBE

> What the four New York City certifications are, what the renewal date means, and what this site leaves out of the city's file.

## How to read these records

### The certifications

MBE: minority-owned business enterprise. WBE: women-owned. EBE: emerging business enterprise. LBE: locally-based
business enterprise. A business can hold several; each has its own renewal date.

### The renewal date

The date by which the certification must be renewed, as in the file of October 1, 2026. A date already past may mean a
renewal in progress.

### Declared by the business

The industry, the bonding limit and the union-contract answer are what the business declared to the city.

### What is not here

The city's file also holds the owner's name, phone number and ethnicity, the business's own description, and the
names of past clients — some of them private individuals. None of it is republished on this site. New York State
runs a separate M/WBE certification, with its own directory.

**For owners and managers: does
your company have 30 to 200 employees?**

AI labs pay companies to license their internal workflows (SOPs,
documentation, support tickets), anonymized and under contract. You keep ownership and pay nothing.

**Describe your company in 2 minutes →**
Offered by Registres, an independent data gateway. Not affiliated with the New York City Department of Small Business Services.
